Introduction :

Being a fan of the James Bond movies I had wanted to play this game ever since hearing about it. What put me off though was the lack of movie license games and was hoping this game would not be a load of rubbish.

From the moment you start playing, if like me, you are a James Bond fan, you are going to enjoy this game. To begin with the real voices are used which adds greatly to the atmosphere plus the character models are pretty good. OK, so you know who each character is meant to be, but they are not going to win any awards. A bit more time could have been spent on the M character but Bond himself is quite realistic.
The game itself takes a stab at mixing up both of the recent Bond movies, not just Quantum of Solace. Does this work? No, not really. I would have preferred a straight game without all the time skipping forwards and backwards. Having seen both movies several times I knew what was going on, but to someone who had not seen the movie, they may well be lost. Also the game tries to fill in between the scenes of the movies, adding in detail and action that was not in the film. Does this work? Again, not really. I would have been happy just sticking to the original plot.
The graphics are OK, using the COD4 game engine but they are nothing spectacular and the sound work is fine. There is an air of laziness in the games production though. All the bad guys just repeatedly shout the same dumb lines and I don't know how many character models they made for the henchmen but there could not have been too many.
Gameplay is solid, mostly due to the COD4 feel but the addition of an excellent cover system. At first it took a little getting used to, but once I had died enough times, I started to make good use of it. If you don't, you will die, pretty simple! Being able to just point yourself at the next piece of cover and run directly to it by holding X works great. Weapons are OK but missed Bond having some of his clever gadgets. Would have been a nice touch on a few of the levels. It would also have been nice if maybe we could have had atleast some driving sections and some flying sections. These are the things that make Bond who he is.
The length of the game is something I would have liked to seen increased. It would be quite easy to sit down and play this game through from start to finish in one sitting. This is not good. Activision are getting a bit of a reputation for this. COD MW2 is probably about the same length as this game. Unlike MW2 I could quite happily sit down and play through this one again though, maybe just because I am a Bond fan.
All in all not a bad game but now a great one. If the game had been longer it would have scored higher. Yes, there may be a multiplayer option and we enjoy those, but I still believe a game like this should be about the single player game first. A lot of people either don't like or cannot play games online. It is bad business to just run off a short shoddy game knowing the hardcore of your fanbase will play the online multiplayer after finishing the solo game.

A fair game that could have and should have been a lot better. Hope they make another Bond game. Having read the latest novel, Devil May Care, I believe that would make a great game.
